Dry body brushing is an ancient practice with roots in many cultures around the world, each recognising its ability to cleanse, invigorate, and restore balance to the body. In ancient Egypt, people used coarse linen cloths and natural fibers to exfoliate and purify the skin as part of their bathing rituals, believing that smooth, clean skin reflected inner vitality and beauty. Garshana involves brisk, dry brushing movements using raw silk gloves to awaken circulation and restore balance to the body’s natural energies.

Indigenous and Eastern European cultures also developed their own variations, using natural materials like birch twigs, sea sponges, or horsehair brushes in sauna and steam rituals to purify and invigorate the skin.

Body Brushing Ritual

Dry brushing is an easy, inexpensive way to love & support your skin. your skin. Begin at the soles of your feet, gently brushing from your toes down to your heels. Move to the tops of your feet, sweeping from your toes back toward your heels. Take your time


Continue with long, gentle strokes from your ankles up to your knees, front & back of legs, always moving upward toward the heart to encourage healthy circulation & lymphatic flow.


Brush the front and back of hands, fingers & arms toward the trunk of the the body. Glide the brush up and over your shoulder blades, finishing at the lymph glands near the front of the airmpits . Brush around the belly in circular motions, from right to left around the belly button, following the natural intestinal flow of the bowel.

Keep your strokes light, slow, and even, allowing your breath to stay calm and steady. You cant go wrong with brushings, just follow what feels right for your body and brush in an upward movement from the bottom of the legs and inward from the arms. It all feels lovely, with the aim to stimulate the cells & exfoliate the skin.


Be gentle on softer areas such as neck, face & decolletage. Some brushes maybe too harsh for this area to use daily.


After brushing, take a moment to breathe deeply. Follow with a warm shower or bath to rinse away exfoliated skin and then apply a nourishing body oil or moisturiser to hydrate your skin and seal in the benefits of your ritual.
